Will IPL go the EPL way?
Quality as they say precedes quantity on any day and in any walk of life. There was a time not long ago when the idea of watching the great Sachin Tendulkar or Virender Sehwag live in action used to bring a glee on my face, but not anymore.
Sorry, it has nothing to do with the fact that they have lesser talent now or is it related to sentiments. It is more to do with the amount of cricket that is being played now than some years ago. Imagine a platter full of a variety of food items and you are being forced to eat and digest everything at one go. The ongoing IPL-4 is a classic case of too much to chew for the viewers.
If you attend any economics class, the professor would swear by the fact that any goods which experience a surplus of supply will definitely lose its sheen, not to mention its value too. But, the naysayers would argue—every IPL game is played to packed houses. Right? No, wrong. Most of the tickets in every game is either sold to the corporates or given in the complimentary passes route. In such a scenario, the first signs of cracks are already beginning to be visible.
From the South African series till the start of the World Cup, the Indian cricket team had about 10-15 odd days off and then the IPL. There will be no respite for them as the tours to the West Indies and England follow suit. For all the hype that English Premier League creates every year, it hardly creates any surprises. While the big guns such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester City swaps placees at the top, others in the fray are happier filling in the numbers year after year.
Is IPL going the EPL way? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Cricket, or for that matter any sport, is all about context. Most of the IPL clashes neither have a meaning, a sub-plot or a reason for its very existence. So, what does the common man do now? Well, we go back to the plate full of food.
