Take a bow, Master!
It was the winter of 1989 when I, as a nine-year-old first saw the highlights of the India-Pakistan Test series when a young Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar made his debut. While there was nothing remarkable about his technique but what impressed me was the youngster’s ability to negotiate with the pace of the likes of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis (who too made his debut during that series). Over the years, Sachin has not just grown to be a run-scorers, he has done keeping it simple and continues to do so. As I sat watching the Master play yet another monumental knock, the familiar signs of nervousness creeped in.
Not in The Man, but in me. I could not finish my tea as I stood next to the plasma screen waiting with bated breath as the South African speedster Dale Steyn steamed in. The Master sprinted for the single that was to give his 50th Test ton and the room was overjoyed. The tea had become cold by the time I laid my eyes again on it, but who cares. In a nation which rather harshly expects its sporting icons to deliver everytime they set foot on the field, Sachin has livened their hearts time and again. He just does not score runs, he scores over his fans and how.
In his 50 centuries, I have watched close to 48 of them and remember literally all his innings. However, the one to take the cake would be his second Test century against Australia at Perth in 1991-92 series. The WACA wicket had bounce, movement but the young Sachin negotiated it with ease, literally etching his name in Sir Don Bradman’s memory. It has never been about Sachin’s records. He has most of them but what has been commendable is the way he carries the burden of expectations of not just his fans but of the media and not to mention his roommates. To be able to do so for over 21 seasons tells the calibre, tenacity and hallmark of this greatest son of India. I had tears in my eyes as he sprinted for the 100th run on Sunday.
It was sheer tears of joy as the man continues to rule the hearts of million. I can’t thank you enough. You have given me enough happiness and joy to live happily for the rest of my life.
